Gianni Francesco Mattioli dead at age 86, deputy and minister of community policies

Gianni Francesco Mattioli, the Italian politician and physicist who served as a deputy from 1987 to 2001 and as minister of community policies from 1998 to 1999, died on June 1, 2026.

Born in Genoa on January 29, 1940, he graduated in physics from Sapienza University of Rome in 1964 and later taught the subject there, focusing his research on quantum mechanics and rational mechanics. Mattioli also played a prominent role in Italy’s anti-nuclear movement, founding the Committee for the Control of Energy Choices in 1978 with Massimo Scalia and launching the magazine Quale energia?

in 1981, which he directed for six years.
