Giorgio Blais, the Italian major-general who won public notice for a solo walk across Italy in 2000, died on August 24, 2026, aged 91.
Born in Turin on April 14, 1935, he served in the Italian Army and rose to major-general. During his career, he served with the Taurinense, Cadore, Orobica and Julia brigades and in central offices in Rome, and he spent about nine years on international missions in the Balkans, an area where he said he had particular expertise.
In the summer of 2000, he set out on foot from Rocciamelone in Piedmont and reached the side of Mount Etna after a 1,700-kilometer journey, describing the undertaking as his “reckless walk through Italy” and saying it was meant to carry a message of brotherhood and Italianness to 42 stopover towns.
