Narana Coissoró, a Portuguese lawyer, academic and politician, died on August 29, 2026, aged 94.
Born in Goa, then in Portuguese India, on October 3, 1931, he moved to Portugal at 18 to study law at the University of Coimbra. Coissoró became a prominent figure in the CDS – People’s Party, serving in the Assembly of the Republic for eight legislatures, leading the party’s parliamentary group from 1978 to 1991, and later holding the post of vice-president of the assembly from 1999 to 2005.
He was also a retired professor at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas and held several Portuguese honours, including the Grand Officer of the Military Order of Christ and the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry.
