Granville Straker, an American record producer and businessman, died on August 27, 2026, aged 86.
Born in Saint Vincent in 1939, he moved to Brooklyn from Trinidad in 1959 and later built a career in Caribbean music, especially calypso. In 1969, he founded Straker’s Records in Brooklyn and produced recordings for many of the artists on the label, helping to establish it as a major outlet for calypso and soca music.
Over roughly three decades, Straker said the company released hundreds of albums, more than 1,000 twelve-inch records and several thousand singles.
