Fernando Mamede, the Portuguese long-distance runner who held the 10,000 metres world record until 1989, died on January 28, 2026.
Born Fernando Eugénio Pacheco Mamede on November 1, 1951, in Beja, he began as a local footballer before turning to school athletics in 1964. He later joined Sporting Clube de Portugal’s athletics section in Lisbon and was coached by Mário Moniz Pereira from 1968 to 1989.
Mamede competed internationally from 1971 to 1984, including at the European and World Championships and the Olympics, and was awarded the Commander of the Order of Merit of Portugal.
