Heiko Weber, the German football player and manager who played for Carl Zeiss Jena and managed ZFC Meuselwitz and Carl Zeiss Jena, died of pancreatic cancer on October 26, 2026, aged 61.
Born in Thale on June 26, 1965, Weber began his senior football career with BSG Stahl Thale, where, as a teenager, he gained his first experience in the GDR’s national game in the second division during the 1983–84 season. In 1988 he moved from Stahl Thale to FC Carl Zeiss Jena, remaining with the club as a player until 1998.
His decade at Jena coincided with the upheaval of German reunification: the team moved from the Oberliga of the former German Democratic Republic into the second Bundesliga in the unified German system. His time at Jena linked the late GDR football scene with the early seasons of the reunified German game. After leaving Jena, Weber spent the 1998–99 season with regional-league side Preußen Münster. He then briefly returned to Thuringia and played again for Carl Zeiss Jena, by then relegated to the northeastern division of the third tier. His work in football also included management at ZFC Meuselwitz and Carl Zeiss Jena.
