More about Rinze Visser

Gender: male.

Occupation: politician.

Rinze Visser, a Dutch communist politician, died on October 17, 2026, aged 87, from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Born in Lemmer, he encountered communist ideas early through his father and joined the Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN) in 1958. He entered elected office in 1970, winning a seat on the municipal council of Lemsterland.

Visser’s council service continued for more than 55 years, including as a representative of the New Communist Party of the Netherlands (NCPN) in the municipality of De Fryske Marren. That long tenure made him the Netherlands’ longest-serving politician and one of its last communist councilors. In 1978, he travelled to the German Democratic Republic as part of a CPN delegation and met its leader, Erich Honecker. Visser joined the League of Communists in the Netherlands (VCN) in 1985, amid disagreement over the CPN’s political direction. He opposed efforts within the CPN to transform it into a broader progressive movement. His political career spanned changes in party organization and municipal government, while his council membership remained a constant feature of public life in the region. His decades of service made him an unusually enduring presence in Dutch local politics.
