Born in Ljubljana on May 18, 1936, she attended the Classical Gymnasium before studying at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, where she graduated in English and German in 1960. She continued her studies at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, spent 1963 and 1964 in London, and later moved to the United States for further study.
In 1965, she earned a master’s degree from Miami University in Ohio. She returned to the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana for doctoral work, completing a doctorate in English literary theory in 1971. Her academic work was based in the faculty’s Department of English and American Studies, where she was a professor of English and American literature. Alongside her work in literature and literary history, Grosman focused particularly on reading. Her research explored how reading could be taught and learned more effectively, bringing questions of reading instruction into her scholarly work. Her education across Slovenia, the United Kingdom and the United States preceded a career centered on English and American literature and the study of reading.
