Mélanie Berger-Volle, an Austrian-born French veteran of World War II and member of the French Resistance, died October 22, 2026, aged 105.

Born in Vienna, she grew up in the city’s Leopoldstadt district in a Jewish family and trained in dressmaking, learning the corset-making trade. She later described developing a political outlook at 13; by 15, she was involved in illegal activity against Austrofascism through the labour movement.

After the 1938 Anschluss, threatened with imprisonment as a Jewish communist, she hitchhiked across Germany to Antwerp, where she remained without legal papers. In early 1939 she crossed into France with friends, disguised as a man among cross-border workers. In Paris, her French– and German-sounding name initially helped protect her, and she obtained a residence permit. Berger-Volle went on to join the French Resistance and was also known as a contemporary witness. Her honours included the Knight of the Legion of Honour, the Knight of the French Order of Academic Palms, the Escapees’ Medal and the Knight of the National Order of Merit. Her life bridged opposition to Austrofascism in Austria and resistance to Nazi occupation in France.
