António Vitalino Dantas, a Portuguese Roman Catholic prelate who served as auxiliary bishop of Lisbon and bishop of Beja, died October 9, 2026, aged 84.

Born on November 3, 1941, he became a member of the Order of Carmelites after initial experiences with the Franciscans and Capuchins. His Carmelite formation included study at the seminary at Falperra, near Braga, and he was ordained a priest on August 3, 1968.

He later pursued theological studies in Germany, where he also worked among Portuguese emigrant communities, combining academic study with ministry to people from Portugal living abroad. Returning to Portugal in 1976, he began pastoral work at the parish of Santo António dos Cavaleiros in Loures, bringing his ministry back to the country after his German period. The Patriarchate of Lisbon appointed him auxiliary bishop in 1996, and he held that office until 1999, when he became bishop of Beja. He remained in the Beja post until his resignation in 2016.
