Eduardo Portela, the Spanish basketball coach and executive who led the ACB from 1990 to 2013, died on June 11, 2026, at the age of 91.
Born in Barcelona on August 30, 1934, he built a long career in Spanish basketball as a player, coach and administrator. Portela coached UE Montgat, FC Barcelona and CP Sant Josep, and later served as technical director of FC Barcelona for nine seasons, from 1971–72 to 1980–81.
During that period he occasionally stepped in as head coach and helped guide the club to the Copa del Rey title in 1979. He also helped found the ACB with José Antonio Gasca and later became its president in 1990, remaining in that role until 2011 before serving as honorary president.
