Born in Paris on September 29, 1924, he studied at the École pratique des hautes études and later taught at institutions including the University of Bordeaux, Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3, Paris-Sorbonne University, Heidelberg University and the University of Zaragoza. A specialist in linguistics, philology and Spanish studies, he was also known for coining the term “orthonymy” and for founding the Amerindian ethnolinguistic group at France’s National Centre for Scientific Research in 1972.
