
Volker Hage, the German journalist, author and literary critic who worked for Der Spiegel, died on April 29, 2026, at the age of 76.
Born in Hamburg in 1949, he began his career in 1975 as an editor in the literature section of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and later worked on the newspaper’s FAZ Magazin supplement. From 1986 to 1992, he was chief literary editor of Die Zeit, and he continued to write for the paper afterward.
He joined Der Spiegel in 1992 and also served on the jury for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize and, later, the German Book Prize.
