Born in Kolkata on June 19, 1955, she began her screen career with the Bengali film Shesh Parba in 1971 and went on to gain wide recognition for playing Marjina in Dinen Gupta’s Marjina Abdulla. Mukherjee built a career across both Bengali and Hindi cinema, appearing in films including Nishi Kanya, Mouchak, Swayamsiddha and Hotel Snow Fox, before making her Bollywood debut in Khaan Dost in 1976.
After later films such as Dujane, she returned to the screen with Ashrita in 1990.
