Jack Preger, a British physician known for providing medical care to poor communities in India, died on October 31, 2026, aged 96.
Born on July 25, 1930, he studied at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, earning postgraduate qualifications in economics and political science before working as a farmer in Wales. After selling his farm, he turned to medicine and entered the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin in 1965.
Having completed his internship in 1972, he responded to a radio appeal for doctors to assist people in newly independent Bangladesh, where he worked in refugee camps in Dhaka. His original intention had been to serve poor communities in South or Central America, and he had learned Spanish in preparation. The appeal took him instead to South Asia, and his work became closely associated with Kolkata and West Bengal. From 1972, he provided medical treatment and vocational training to poor people in the region. He established Calcutta Rescue, a relief agency connected with that work. Preger’s career brought together clinical care and vocational instruction, extending his service beyond immediate medical treatment to practical training for people living in poverty.
