Laura Balbo, an Italian politician and sociologist, died on April 16, 2026, at the age of 92.
Born in Padua on November 30, 1933, she graduated from the University of Padua in 1956 with a degree in sociology and later studied at the University of California, Berkeley as a Fulbright Scholar. Balbo taught sociology at the Universities of Milan and Ferrara, and held visiting roles at Harvard University and the University of California, Santa Cruz.
She also served in the Italian Parliament and held cabinet office. Her work focused on racism, urbanization, family policies, the welfare state and women in society.
