Giorgos Gonios, a Greek footballer best known for his career with Panathinaikos, died on April 16, 2026, at the age of 79.

A defender, he began his career as a forward at Agios Ierotheos before signing for Panathinaikos in the summer of 1968. In his first season, he scored 20 goals for the club, including 18 in the Alpha Ethniki, before later being used in defense.

He was part of the Panathinaikos squad that reached the 1971 European Cup final against Ajax and later captained the team to victory in the 1977 Balkans Cup against Slavia Sofia. In total, he played 310 matches for Panathinaikos and scored 31 goals.
