Denis Zacharopoulos, a Greek art historian, died in Athens on October 4, 2026, aged 74.
Born in Athens on June 11, 1952, he studied music there before moving to France in 1970. His studies in France began with literature, semantics and philosophy, and later included the history and sociology of the arts, as well as literature.
Jean Cassou, Gaëtan Picon, Louis Marin and Roland Barthes were among his teachers. Zacharopoulos’s professional work encompassed art history and theory, university teaching, writing, opinion journalism and curating. In 1975, he became program coordinator at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, then spent time in New York. He went on to teach as a professor at fine arts academies in Geneva, Vienna and Amsterdam. His curatorial projects included documenta IX in Kassel and the 48th Venice Biennale, bringing him into two prominent international exhibition settings. He lived in France, where he became a French citizen, and had lived in Greece since 2000.
