John Delaney, the English footballer who played for Wycombe Wanderers, Bournemouth and the national amateur team, died on September 15, 2026, aged 84.
Born John Joseph Delaney in Slough on February 4, 1942, he began in Queens Park Rangers’ youth ranks before moving through local football with Slough Town, where he started as a goalkeeper and later converted to defence. He went on to captain Slough and made 243 appearances in all competitions, scoring 52 goals.
Delaney signed for Wycombe Wanderers in 1963 and also represented Bournemouth, later turning out for Hayes, Sutton United and Hampton. His career then moved into management, including player-manager spells at Tring Town and Oxford City, where he succeeded Bobby Moore in 1981.
