Herman Branover Russian-Israeli physicist dead at age 94

Herman Branover

Herman Branover, a RussianIsraeli physicist and Jewish educator, died on May 4, 2026, at age 94.

He was known in the scientific community as a pioneer in magnetohydrodynamics and in the Jewish world as an author, translator, publisher, and educator. Born in Riga, Latvia, into an atheist Jewish family, he later earned a Ph.D.

from the Moscow Aviation Institute and a D.Sc. in physics and mathematics from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute. Branover also adhered to the customs and mystical philosophy of Chabad Hasidism and was among the initiators of the Jewish revival movement in Soviet Russia.
