Harry van der Kamp, the Dutch bass singer and voice teacher, died on August 17, 2026, aged 79.
Born in Kampen in 1947, he became known for work in opera and concert, singing in Cappella Amsterdam, which he co-founded, and then from 1974 for decades with the Nederlands Kamerkoor. He performed 30 roles with the Dutch National Opera, largely in Baroque repertoire but also in contemporary works, and appeared as a soloist with historically informed ensembles.
Van der Kamp also founded the Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam in 1984 to perform lesser-known madrigals of the 16th and 17th centuries, and later helped record the complete vocal works of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, work that contributed to a reassessment of the composer and earned him the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He studied singing at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory and was also an academic voice teacher.
