Born in Vaals on February 21, 1945, he began his career as a concert singer and built a reputation in contemporary music, including the world premiere of Mauricio Kagel’s Mare Nostrum. He made his Dutch National Opera debut in 1973 as Sid in Britten’s Albert Herring, and later appeared there in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda alongside Joan Sutherland.
His subsequent international career included roles such as Mandryka in Richard Strauss’s Arabella, as well as appearances in world premieres including Menotti’s La Loca at New York City Opera and the complete version of Henze’s König Hirsch at the Staatsoper Stuttgart.
