Sjoerd Kuyper, the Dutch poet and author whose work ranged from children’s books to screenplays and lyrics, died on September 22, 2026, aged 74.
Born in Amsterdam on March 6, 1952, he became known for writing across adult, children’s and young adult literature, as well as for theatre and television. Among his best-known works were the film The Pocket-knife (Het Zakmes), the series of books about the toddler Robin, the poem Mensen met koffers, the lyrics Hallo wereld, and the youth novels Hotel De Grote L and Bizar.
His books appeared in 15 countries, and he won major Dutch literary honors including the Gouden Griffel, six Zilveren Griffels, the Theo Thijssen Prize for his body of work, and the Staatsprijs voor kinder- en jeugdliteratuur. In 2014, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau.
