Born in Ireland on July 1, 1964, and originally from Dunboyne, County Meath, he represented Ireland in the men’s 1500 metres in Seoul, where he ran 3:43.23 in his heat. Known also as Gerard O’Reilly, he concentrated on track from the age of 16 after playing soccer and Gaelic games, won the Irish junior 1500-metre title, and later earned a scholarship to Villanova University in 1983, graduating in 1987 with a degree in economics.
