Born Franco Gabelli in Bedonia, Italy, on May 7, 1947, he moved with his family to Seraing in Belgium when he was three. He began work as a television electronics technician at 16 before launching his singing career with the 1974 single “Je ne peux vivre sans toi” on RCA.
