Born in Elmina on August 7, 1980, Blay began his football career in 1996 with Sekondi Hasaacas before moving to Standard Liège, where he made his Belgian First Division debut in 1997 and later scored his first goal for the club in 1998. After five seasons in Belgium, he transferred to Dinamo București in 2006 and helped the Romanian side win the league title in his first season, while also featuring in its UEFA Cup campaign.
