Michael Wright, the English road bicycle racer, died September 30, 2026, aged 85.

Born in Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, on March 25, 1941, he moved to Belgium with his family at the age of three and grew up in Liège. His father had died in the Second World War, and his mother later married a Belgian soldier.

Football was Wright’s first sport. When his stepfather died, leaving the family short of money, Wright turned to cycling as a more lucrative way to use his athletic ability. The change led him from football into professional road racing. From 1962 to 1976, he competed as a professional, building a career on the international circuit. He won stages in the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, and represented Great Britain at several world championships. His career thus spanned major European stage races and international championship competition, while linking the country where he was born with the country where he grew up. Wright died in Liège, Belgium.
