More about Jacqueline Van Quaille
Jacqueline Van Quaille was a Belgian operatic soprano and academic teacher who died on October 16, 2026, aged 90.
Born in Gentbrugge, she studied at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, taking voice lessons with M. Teugels and studying performance with Karel Locufier.
After graduating in 1957, she began her professional work with the West Flemish Operetta Company in Kortrijk and Roeselare. She later worked at the Ghent Opera, Opernhaus Wuppertal and Graz Opera, performing onstage for 56 years and taking leading roles in European opera houses. Her repertoire encompassed contemporary opera and operettas as well as major operatic roles. Pamina in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” and the title role in Puccini’s “Tosca” were among her signature parts. She portrayed Isolde in a 1970 television film of Wagner’s “Tristan and Isolde.” In the later part of her career, she also performed in musicals, taught at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent and founded an operetta theatre. Her work thus spanned opera, operetta and musical theatre, alongside her teaching at the conservatory where she had trained. Her appointments took her from Belgium to opera companies in Germany and Austria, while her leading roles brought her to stages across Europe.
