Frank Stack, an American cartoonist, died on April 12, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born Frank Huntington Stack in Houston, Texas, he was an underground cartoonist and artist who worked under the name Foolbert Sturgeon to avoid persecution for his work while living in the Bible Belt. In 1964, he published The Adventures of Jesus, which is considered by many to be the first underground comic.

Stack was also widely known as a printmaker, specializing in etchings and lithographs, and his work included oil paintings and watercolors. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1959 and later earned a master’s degree from the University of Wyoming.
