Born in Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, on July 9, 1937, he became one of the most recognizable figures in British art and a major contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s. His work spanned painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, pad drawing and set design, and he spent much of his career between England and California.
Among his best-known works was Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), which sold at auction in 2018 for $90 million and briefly set the record for the most expensive work by a living artist.
