Dagfinn Føllesdal, a Norwegian-born American academic and philosopher, died on March 1, 2026.
He was the Clarence Irving Lewis Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Stanford University and professor emeritus at the University of Oslo. Born Dagfinn Kåre Føllesdal in Askim, Norway, on June 22, 1932, he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Oslo, then studied at Harvard University, where he received his Ph.D.
in 1961 under Willard Van Orman Quine. He taught at Harvard from 1961 to 1964 and began teaching at Stanford in 1968. In 2009, he was appointed Commander of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav.
