Anton Kurnia, an Indonesian writer and translator, died on September 18, 2026, aged 52.
He studied geological engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology and journalism at IAIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung before working in publishing as a translator and editor. Kurnia spent many years at Serambi in Jakarta, where he became managing editor, and later founded and led the Baca publishing house.
His fiction, essays, and literary translations appeared in a range of Indonesian newspapers, magazines, and journals, including Horison, Jurnal Cerpen Indonesia, Kompas, Tempo, Koran Tempo, Media Indonesia, Republika, Pikiran Rakyat, Jawa Pos, The Jakarta Post and Asia Literary Review. He also wrote columns for outlets including Deutsche Welle Indonesia, and some of his short stories were translated into English and included in the anthologies Menagerie 5 and Compassion and Solidarity.
