A professor emerita at the University of Minnesota, she was an American studies scholar whose work focused on the visual arts and on the cultural life of the United States. Born in Rochester, she earned a Ph.D.
at Bryn Mawr College before coming to Minnesota in 1977 to teach. Over the years, she became known for writing about American popular culture and for books on subjects ranging from Grandma Moses to the cultural meaning of state fairs and shopping malls. She wrote 19 full-length nonfiction books.
