Born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, he began wrestling in 1958 and later built a career that took him to Cleveland, Ontario, Florida, the Carolinas, Calgary and Memphis. In the 1970s, he also worked under the name The Black Baron, managing wrestlers including Abdullah the Butcher, the Love Brothers, Crusher Verdu and the Samoans.
Before entering wrestling, Swayze played hockey.
