Whittemore, an American epidemiologist and biostatistician, died on December 2, 2025. She studied the effects of genetics and lifestyle on cancer after an earlier career as a pure mathematician focused on group theory.
Whittemore was a professor of health research and policy and of biomedical data science at Stanford University, and she served as president of the International Biometric Society. Born on July 5, 1936, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Marymount Manhattan College, a master’s degree from Hunter College, and a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
