Born in Zagreb on July 6, 1943, he became one of the leading handball figures of the 1960s and 1970s. He played for Dinamo, Medveščak, Zagreb, Solingen and Mulhouse, and was credited with scoring about 5,000 goals over his professional career.

Žagmešter also represented Yugoslavia, winning a bronze medal at the 1970 World Championship, and he was the youngest player to appear for the national side in an official match, at 19.
