Erik Olssen, the New Zealand historian whose work examined the links between social structures, politics and ideas, died on July 29, 2026, aged 84.
Born in Hamilton on December 14, 1941, he studied at the University of Otago, where he later built his academic career in the Department of History from 1969 until his retirement in 2002, when he was named emeritus professor. His early research concentrated on labour history and the mobilisation of working people in New Zealand between 1880 and 1940, including a study of Caversham.
He also wrote on John A. Lee and on the history of Otago, and his later publications included works on working lives, people and land, and the origins of an experimental society. Olssen was known also as Erik Newland Olssen and E. N. Olssen, and received honours including the Te Rangi Hiroa Medal, the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi.
