Yitzhak Apeloig dead at age 81, president of Technion

Yitzhak Apeloig, an Uzbek-born Israeli computational chemist and scholar who served as president of Technion from 2001 to 2009, died on May 28, 2026.

He was 81. Apeloig was born in Bukhara, in what was then the Uzbek SSR, and later studied chemistry and physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

A distinguished professor at Technion’s Schulich Faculty of Chemistry, he became known for his work in computational chemistry, particularly ab initio quantum chemistry methods used to predict the physical and chemical properties of materials. During his Technion presidency, he recruited more than 150 scholars and scientists from around the world and helped establish interdisciplinary centers including the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute and the Lorry I. Lokey Interdisciplinary Center for Life Sciences and Engineering.
