Born in Vilnius on March 19, 1932, Shelah played most of his career for Hapoel Tel Aviv B.C. as a point guard and represented Israel at the 1952 Summer Olympics, EuroBasket 1953 and the 1954 FIBA World Championship.

He later moved into coaching, leading Hapoel Tel Aviv to four Israeli Basketball Premier League titles in the 1960s and guiding the national team to qualification for four EuroBasket tournaments and to a gold medal at the 1966 Asian Games.
