Kapeliele Faupala, the French Wallisian traditional ruler who served as the 51st Lavelua of Wallis (Uvea) from 2008 to 2014, died on August 6, 2026, aged 86.
Born in Ahoa on Wallis Island on March 29, 1940, he was known locally as Kapeliele “Gabriel” Faupala and was crowned Lavelua on July 25, 2008, after the death of Tomasi Kulimoetoke II in 2007. Before taking the throne, he had been the holder of the Kalae Kivalu title and headed the Customary Council of Ministers for several years.
