Known also as an actor in Tamil and Kannada cinema, he began his screen career with the Kannada films Rishyasringa in 1977 and Grahana in 1978. His work later included supporting and minor roles in Tamil films, among them Sathyaa in 1988. Born into a Telugu family, he also had postgraduate degrees in Kannada literature and philosophy, along with training in drama and diplomas in French and German.
