Romano Garofalo, the Italian cartoonist, writer and journalist whose work helped shape popular comics in Italy, died on July 15, 2026, in Rimini.
Born in Rimini on November 11, 1941, he became widely known as the creator of Jonny Logan and Alfonso, and was among the most prolific Italian comic-book authors of the 1970s and 1980s. Garofalo collaborated with a number of prominent Italian artists, including Leone Cimpellin, Giorgio Cavazzano, Giorgio Trevisan, Silvano Sacchetti, Marzio Lucchesi, Giuseppe Scapigliati, Massimo Albini, Magnus, Giovanni Zaccagnini, Silvia Mondini, Silver and Clod.
He studied at the Liceo Classico Giulio Cesare in Rimini, went on to earn a degree in literature and philosophy from the University of Bologna, and later continued his studies in psychology at the State University of Milan while establishing himself in comics, with Jonny Logan also reaching television audiences through Supergulp on Rai Due.
