Michel Fano, the French musician, composer and writer whose work also extended to filmmaking and sound design, died on August 31, 2026, aged 96.
Born in the 16th arrondissement of Paris on December 9, 1929, he became associated in the early 1950s with the Darmstadt School and remained a lifelong friend of Pierre Boulez. Fano later developed the concept of continuum sonore, a way of thinking about how a film soundtrack can interact with its images, and from 1962 to 1975 he worked regularly with Alain Robbe-Grillet on cinematic projects.
He was also honored as a Knight of the Legion of Honour and an Officer of Arts and Letters.
