Triona Holden, the British author, artist, journalist and former BBC presenter and correspondent, died on August 29, 2026, aged 66.

Writing under the name Triona Palmer after her marriage, she began her career in 1976 at the Sheffield Star newspaper, where she worked as a journalist and later an assistant crime reporter. Her first major story was the Peter Sutcliffe case.

She went on to work briefly in broadcast journalism at Mercia Sound in Coventry and as a freelancer for LBC in London before joining the BBC in 1982. After starting in radio, she moved into television news, where she worked as a presenter and reporter and covered the 1984-85 miners’ strike. That experience later informed her 2005 book Queen Coal: Women of the Miners.
