Born in Mülheim an der Ruhr on April 15, 1928, he built a career in analysis, with a focus on approximation theory and harmonic analysis. His work also extended to Fourier analysis and semigroups of operators in Banach spaces, as well as probability theory, sampling theory and signal analysis.
Butzer taught at several universities, including the University of Würzburg, RWTH Aachen University, McGill University and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Also known as Paul Leo Butzer, he was educated in part in Canada after his family left Germany in 1937 and later attended Loyola College and the University of Toronto.
