Born in New Orleans in 1936, he studied at Columbia University, earning a degree in physics and geology in 1958. Isacks joined Cornell University as a professor of geological sciences in 1971 and remained there until his retirement in 2008.
He was also known for his work on subduction and received the Walter H. Bucher Medal of the American Geophysical Union in 2014.
