Nigel Dunnett

Nigel Dunnett, British horticulturalist and professor, died on April 26, 2026, at the age of 63.

He was professor of planting design and urban horticulture at the University of Sheffield and worked on naturalistic planting design, sustainable urban drainage landscapes, and green infrastructure projects with landscape architects. After completing a degree in botany at the University of Bristol in 1984 and a PhD, he joined the University of Sheffield’s Department of Landscape in 1994 and became professor in 2011.

His teaching and research focused on ecological planting design, green roofs, rain gardens and large-scale urban meadows. He founded Pictorial Meadows in 1998.
