Mircea Răceanu, a Romanian-born American diplomat and political dissident, died on April 25, 2026, at age 90.
Born Mircea Bernat on October 17, 1935, he was born in Văcărești Prison, where his mother was serving a sentence for Communist activities. His parents were members of the underground Romanian Communist Party in the 1930s.
After World War II, his mother married Grigore Răceanu. He grew up in Bucharest, studied at the Ion Luca Caragiale High School, and later attended the State Institute of International Relations in Moscow.
