Beng Chin Ooi Singaporean computer scientist dead at age 64

Beng Chin Ooi

Beng Chin Ooi, a Singaporean computer scientist, died on April 25, 2026.

He was 64 or 65. Ooi was known for work on systems including GEOQL, BestPeer, Apache SINGA, BlockBench and NeurDB, as well as research in learnable function, filter and refine, and distributed processing.

He was a Qiushi Chair Professor at Zhejiang University and a professor at the School of Software Technology there. Ooi previously served as the Lee Kong Chian Centennial Professor and dean of the School of Computing at the National University of Singapore from 2007 to 2013. He received multiple honors, including ACM SIGMOD and IEEE awards, and was a co-recipient of the 2011 Singapore President’s Science Award.
