Lyudmila Shevtsova retired Russian-Ukrainian athlete dead at age 91

Lyudmila Shevtsova, a RussianUkrainian athlete, died on April 13, 2026, at the age of 91.

She competed mainly in the 800 metres and set a world record in the event on July 3, 1960, in 2 min 4.3 seconds, a time she equaled while winning the Olympic gold medal in the 800 m two months later. Born in Taman in 1934, she had first trained in artistic gymnastics before switching to running in 1951.

During her career, she won nine national titles, and after retiring she coached athletics in Kyiv.
